Founded in 1966 as a museum collection, it was transformed into a Historical Museum in 2006 with a decision taken by the Municipal Council.
At the Museum of History in Petrich you will meet the past, our historical legacy and pride that we are the successors of brave Bulgarians. Now it is housed in the community center “Bratya Miladinovi” and has over 18000 museum exhibits divided into five departments: Archeology, Ethnography and “House Vanga”, Bulgarian Lands XV – XIX century, Contemporary and Modern History as well as the “Samuilova Fortress” department.
Archeology Department has 8400 exhibits, of which special attention deserve. The ancient city of Heraclea Sintica is akin to an open-air museum.
“Samuilova Fortress” Department is an open-air museum, featuring a memorial and exhibition presenting the heroic events of 1014.
Department of Ethnography has 1600 exhibits the greatest importance of which holds the clothing reflecting women’s lifestyle in the town at the end of XIX and the beginning of XX century, as well as those that belonged to refugees from Thessaloniki, Demirhisar and Vardar.
Department of Bulgarian Lands XV – XIX century consists of over 500 exhibits including labor tools, ceramics from the daily life, objects of the local crafts industry and others.
Department of Contemporary and Modern History consists of 4000 exhibits, divided into inventory books of Contemporary and Modern history, History of the Bulgarian Communist Party.
The museum organizes educational programs and archaeological research.
