Troskovski or Brestovo monastery “St. Archangel Michael” is located 20 km Southwest of Simitli, in the village of Brestovo, Maleshevska mountain.
Since Brestovo was a quarter of Troskovo, the monastery continues to be called Troskovski. Near the monastery is the rock phenomenon Komatianski Rocks. The monastery is one of the oldest in southwestern Bulgaria, built in 1149 and had rooms for monks, worshipers, people passing by, and a cell school. It is unique in technology. The ancient masters soldered the stones with mortar dampened with milk, sugar and eggs for greater strength. The monastery is located in the valley of the Stara Reka River. It is burned three times by the Turks. Today, only the church remains. During the Krupnik’s earthquake in 1904, the monastery was completely destroyed, but soon after it was restored – for two years with the help of donors.
