Monastery “St. Great Martyr George the Victorious” is a Bulgarian monastery built on a hill near the town of Hadzhidimovo on an old Christian sanctuary.
After the Rila and Rozhen Monastery, the Hadzhidimov’s is the third largest monastery in Southwestern Bulgaria. Consecrated in 1865. It is one of the southernmost situated monasteries in the country and the closest monastery to Mount Athos. Studies of the area show that even before the fall under Ottoman rule around 1290 a Christian sanctuary dedicated to St. George the Victorious was built there. In the Ottoman conquest around the middle of the 14th century, the temple was burned several times by the invaders, and later abandoned and completely forgotten. During the first excavations an icon was found that had been kept in the altar and was not exported to worship. So it was gradually forgotten and no special tribute was given. In 1961, at the insistence of the church board of the monastery the icon was sent to the Academy of Sciences for Certification. It was found that it dates back to 1750-1800.
The same year it was turned back to the monastery consecrated by Metropolitan Pimen, and exposed for worship. In July 1979, a fire broke out in the monastery. The temple burns completely, only the miraculous icon of St. George survived. The monastery was declared a cultural monument of regional significance.
Reconstruction of the monastery was carried out under a project under the RDP 2007-2013.
