The Metropolitan Church “St. St. Cyril and Methodius and the Holy Prophet Elijah ” was built at the beginning of the 20th century in the Varosha quarter, near Gotse Delchev Square.
Its construction began in 1904 and continued until 1907. For the construction of the church people brought the icons from the already existing chapel “St. Prophet Elijah” who was in a very bad condiion and ready to fall. From there comes the name “St. St. Cyril and Methodius and St. Elijah the Prophet “. In 1914, the high four floors bell tower with three bells – one large and two small – was completed. The church is surrounded by green areas and decorative trees that Negropeks call the Poppy Garden.
The church is a three-nave pseudo-basilica with a double-sided roof, with new tiles. In 1934 near it were laid the mortal remains of Metropolitan Nevrocopius Makarius. The church has three doors – west, north and east. The inner space of the temple is made up of two traditional parts – the altar and the naos.
The floors and columns are covered with a beautiful mosaic, the windows are with colored glass. There are 75 icons from the 18th and 19th centuries in there, made by masters from the Bansko Art School. The church is declared a cultural monument of local significance.
