Municipality of Gotse Delchev is situated in Southwest Bulgaria, along the Mesta River.
Administrative, economic and cultural center of the municipality is the town of Gotse Delchev (up to 1950 – Nevrokop).
Gotse Delchev is the center of the Nevrocopian Metropolis and the Regional Mufti’s Office.
Within the territory stays the most south-eastern part of “Pirin” National Park and the “Orelyak”. On its territory are situated the high Pirin lakes Breznik and Kornitsa, many ponds and springs (Banichanski, Musomishtki in “Toplika”).
The city and the region have ancient history. Numerous remains of ancient and late ancient settlements were found there. Nevrokop arose at 7 km from Nicopolis ad Nestum (I – VI century) – the major city between the Struma and Mesta during the Roman and Early Byzantine times.
Nevrokop became a center of religious, educational and national liberation struggles of the Bulgarians. In 1894 Nevrokop became the seat of Nevrokop diocese. A good idea of the rich historical past and cultural heritage of the area offers the historical museum in Gotse Delchev, positioned in house declared as a cultural monument of national importance. Monuments of culture are also the churches “St. Archangel Michael” (1811) and “Uspenie na Sveta Bogoroditza” (1865). Examples of traditional Renaissance architecture are preserved in the villages Delchevo Dobrotino and Mоsomishte.
