The building of the former turkish Konak is immovable cultural value with entirely preserved architectural volume at the National Archaeological reserve “Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance town of Melnik.”
This is the most monumental renaissance public building in the city. With its sophisticated and elegant architectural image, it stands out among the preserved Turkish administrative buildings in Bulgaria, in which are manifested the local tradition of the domestic architecture and oriental decorative motifs. Built in the early XIX century for the needs of the Vali /the district governor/. The building served as a workplace and the home of the administrator appointed. At the beginning of XX century the building is used for administrative purposes. Later on, it was used as a school and after the building of the new school near-by, it became a dormitory building. In the 90 years of the twentieth century until today is abandoned.
Within the framework of a project under the INTERREG V-A Greece-Bulgaria 2014-2020 Cooperation Programme is foreseen envisages complete conservation, restoration and socialization of the Konak building, as well as turning it into a historical museum of the town of Melnik, as a branch of the National Historical Museum.
