Based on documents the monastery was built by despot Alexius Slav at the beginning of XIII centuries.
This most remarkable ruler of Melnik declare the city the capital of its independent state and joined its lands to Bulgaria kingdom after the battle of Klokotnitsa.
The Holy Virgin Pantanasa is considered the patroness of the severely ill people. The special energy of this sacred place attracted thousands of people coming here to be cured. It is no coincidence that among the ruins of the monastery complex except the farm buildings and the typical regional wineries were found health station.
It is known that this monastery functioned until the early twentieth century, but even today people believe that the saint continues to help and heal. Holy Trinity church is a small church located on a picturesque hill in the Melnik rock pyramids and it is part of the monastery complex “The Holy Virgin Pantanasa.” It was built in XIII century by despot Slav.
Archaeological studies have found four graves. After osseous analysis was proven there were laid the bodies of Despot Alexius Slav and his family.
