The church is built in XIII centuries. It is dedicated to Saint Barbara, which is extremely rare.
According to the historic data it was a family church of the Kordopoulos. Family churches are not uncommon here, many of the wealthy Melnik residents have had their private temples, but Saint Barbara’s church is the biggest one.
It was a large three-nave one-apse building. The decoration was with an exquisite mural painting of the best Melnik as evidenced by the discovered fragments in the archaeological researchеs. The church has borne several reconstructions, the last ones of which were of the Revival Period. Today the church serves as a natural scenery for cultural events and a scene for artistic appearances, because of its unique acoustics.
