The Early Neolithic settlement is the oldest in the region.
The Early Neolithic settlement is the oldest in the region. It was founded by the first farmers who dwelled in this part of Struma Valley in the first half of the 6th millennium BC.
Up to this point, what is uncovered includes a part of unique fortification structure – a ditch almost 2 m deep with a wall running in its middle, additionally strengthened by earth paneling. In the so-fenced space, expert teams have found traces of several buildings, including a burnt house with preserved interior: oven, a large pot (seed-depository), as well as a grave of 9-months old baby. Its body was found in a folded position, resulting from placing it in a bag of organic matter, leather or cloth.
The findings registered so far (instruments of stone, bones and clay, flint tools and various jewelry) show that there have been specialized activities performed in this settlement – something that is not typical for such an early stage of human civilization.
