The historical museum in Belitsa was established as a historical exposition in 1968. At the beginning the exposition was placed in one of the local cultural center`s halls.
In 1983, after the increasing of the number af the exponates, a modern building was build and the museum is there till now. This is the only museum on the upper reaches of the Mesta River.
The Historical Museum in Belitsa is made up of six departments with different directions, located on an area of 520 sq.m. The “Archeology” department displays the “Sarkophagus of the Horseman” – a unique Thracian sarcophagus, which is unique in the Balkans since 2500. BC This is the most valuable exhibit in the mountain town. It was discovered in the burial mound in the Belishka Chuka locality near the town of Belitsa during excavations in 1995 along with other remains of an ancient and splendid Thracian funeral. An ethnographic exhibition shows the local lifestyle and culture of the population in the municipality.
