Archaeological Museum – Sandanski was founded in 1936. The museum is one of the five archaeological museums in Bulgaria, specialized in the field of ancient archaeology.
It is situated over the foundations of St. John’s basillica.
The boundaries of the archaeological reserve “Ancient and late antique city under the present town of Sandanski” cover entirely the modern city center.
On the first floor of the museum has been restored and preserved the floor level of the basilica, explored in the 60s. It includes mosaics from the early Christian period (fifth century), including a unique mosaic inscription.
Exceptionally interesting is the collection of Roman marble gravestones (I-III c.) – the biggest in Bulgaria, rarely seen in Europe and typical only for this region. Some of the models are world-class.
Along with this you can see and votive tablets and altars for revered in ancient deities.
The monuments were gathered for a period of 80 years from all the settlements in the municipality. Real masterpieces of ancient art are the tablets of Julius Maximum, of Asclepius and others. The collection has also various votive tablets – of Artemis, Aphrodite, Zeus, Tyche, the local deity Teos Selenos.
