Municipality of Garmen is situated in Southwest Bulgaria, at the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains.
It covers parts of the Mesta river valley and western slopes of the Dubrava part of the mountain. Among it is situated the reserve “Tumnata gora”(Dark Forest) with old trees (over 180 years, with a height of 50-60 m) – firs, spruces and beeches typical of western Rhodopes. In the valley of the Kanina, about 1 km northeast of the village of Garmen there are 24 hot mineral springs. Particularly interesting for tourists are the remarkable remains of the ancient city of Nicopolis ad Nestum / I – VI century / on the outskirts of the village of Garmen, founded by the Roman Emperor Trajan in honor of his victory over the Dacians. Other attractions are the “St. George church”/from 898 years/ and two huge old plane trees in the village center.
An attraction for the municipality is also the village of Kovachevitsa declared an architectural and historical reserve, and the Leshten Village – confirmed as a holiday village. Tourist interest is the spa resort of Ognyanovo with its healing mineral water and the large forest park along the Kanina River. In the village of Ribnovo you can see the beauty of the multicolored traditional costume. Even today is preserved an ancient ritual “Galina”, which is related to the drawing of the bride for the wedding in the villages of Ribnovo and Skrebatno.
